Polyester is a highly durable synthetic fibre. Because it naturally repels water and resists everyday wear and tear, it serves as the lightweight outer shell for most modern waterproof jackets.
British chemists patented polyester in 1941, but the formula was quickly classified as a state secret during World War II for potential military use. This early research paved the way for the tough cotton and polyester blends famously used in mid-century military field jackets. Decades later, the outdoor industry utilised these rugged fabrics to protect fragile waterproof membranes, permanently replacing heavy and uncomfortable rubber raincoats.
